Fandom occupies almost every aspect of our modern lives yet society has refused to acknowledge its relevance. We wish to consider whether the tendency to become a fan of something or someone is not only normal, but is in itself an act to be celebrated. Fans are not simply passive observers, but people who are inspired by the work of others to explore their own creativity. Our popular culture is intrinsically linked with our interest in and desire to support artists and entertainers. So why is the image of the lonely, obsessed, uninteresting fan the one fed us by the media? That picture always makes us laugh, but it's not real, and it's not the whole story.
